First Lady Michelle Obama to visit Boston today

First Lady Michelle Obama will meet with Boston Marathon bombing victims and headline a fundraiser for U.S. Senate candidate Ed Markey during a trip to Boston on Wednesday.

This is the first lady’s second visit to Boston in the last six weeks. She and the president attended a memorial service three days after the bombings and spent time during that trip with patients at Boston Children’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Wednesday’s fundraiser at the Taj Hotel is the first campaign event that the first lady has participated in since the 2012 presidential election, according to the Boston Globe. Donors will pay between $500 to $37,600 for a seat.

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama officially endorsed Markey. The Democrat and GOP candidate Gabriel Gomez are battling for the Senate seat left vacant when John Kerry was appointed secretary of state.

“Ed Markey is a passionate and effective champion for middle-class and working families, and we need him in the Senate to keep moving our country forward,” Obama said in a statement endorsing Markey. “Massachusetts has a long history of senators who have made a real difference for the Commonwealth and our nation, and I know Ed Markey will continue that great tradition.”

Gomez released his own statement Tuesday, calling Markey “an out of touch, career Washington politician who has never had to make a payroll or balance a budget. We need a new approach.”

Markey and Gomez face off in the Senate election on June 25.
