Girl injured in marathon bombings voted prom queen
A Lowell teenager seriously injured in the Boston Marathon bombings received an unexpected gift Tuesday night when she was elected prom queen.
Sydney Corcoran suffered shrapnel wounds to her legs in the April 15 explosions. Despite being on crutches, the Lowell High School senior was determined to attend the dance.“I know that I can’t dance with them but just to be back with my friends from high school, I haven’t seen them in over a month so I’m happy to go tonight and see everyone,” Sydney told WBZ before the event.
Sydney’s mother, Celeste, lost both legs below the knee after the blasts.
“She’s been through a lot, she deserves to have fun tonight,” Celeste said.
Sydney celebrated her 18th birthday from a hospital bed at Boston Medical Center. She told the Lowell Sun that she plans to study psychology at Merrimack College after graduating next week.
