Mayor Nutter: Don’t waste food stamps on soda
In a letter to congressional leaders, mayors of 18 major American cities including Michael Nutter advocated for changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
As the food-stamp program faces federal cuts, the mayors asked for continued assistance to those in need, but championed changes to help facilitate healthier habits.
More than one-third of American adults are now obese, the letter stated, “which costs approximately $147 billion per year in associated medical expenses.”
“It is time to test and evaluate approaches limiting SNAP’s subsidization of products, such as sugar-sweetened beverages, that are contributing to obesity,” the letter read.
Officials also suggested incentives for healthy eating.
