The family of Officer Peter Figoski, killed in the line of duty while responding to a robbery in 2011, may finally get some peace, as the remaining two defendants in the case have been sentenced today.

Nelson Morales, 29, and Kevin Santos, 32, were sentenced to 25 years for burglary and 20-years-to-life for murder in the second degree.

Figoski’s mother Mary Ann asked the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association to put out a statement on her behalf after the sentencing. She acknowledged the work of everyone involved, including the defense attorneys, and said the trial “brought home to us how fortunate we are to live in a country where every effort is made to insure justice is served.”

“To have all the work and effort pause for the moment in court when the jury foreperson is asked to read the verdict is a moment that was historic for us,” the officer’s mother said in the statement.

Earlier this year, Lamont Pride was convicted of murder in the second degree and sentenced to 45-years-to-life in prison after he was found guilty of shooting Figoski.

The shooting occurred in the early morning hours of December 12, 2011. Figoski and his partner, Detective Glenn Estrada, responded to a robbery in the Cypress Hills neighborhood in Brooklyn around 2:15 a.m. They encountered Morales, Santos, and three other men reportedly attempting to rob a drug dealer in a Brooklyn basement apartment. As the robbers attempted to flee, Pride shot Figoski in the face, the DA said.

Pride had confessed to possessing the gun and shooting Figoski, but claimed it was accidental, as the gun discharged when he tripped as he was running away.

The getaway driver involved was acquitted of all charges after he claimed he was not aware the other men were planning a robbery.

Figoski’s mother also thanked his former colleagues at the 75th Precinct in her statement.

“We will never forgot your support, love and concern over the last 18 months,” she said. ”You truly are our family.”
