Dave Sweeney threw out the first pitch, and his departed son’s brethren were the first to play on Dan Sweeney Field.

Field 1, the largest of four diamonds at the upper fields of the Fox Chase playground in Northeast Philadelphia, was dedicated yesterday. A sign was placed behind the backstop, where Sweeney played catcher for his Fox Rok baseball teams.

Sweeney and Lt. Robert Neary were killed April 9, 2012 after a wall collapsed at a Kensington warehouse fire.

Following the ceremony, friends and family participated in the second annual softball tournament, which raises money for the Daniel Sweeney Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Members of Engine 7-Ladder 10 were, fittingly, the first to play on the field after its dedication.

City Councilman Brian O’Neill said the diamond was called Field 1 because of its location, but he added the name means much more. “This is THE field in Fox Chase. This is the big field,” he said. “Every kid that goes through the baseball program at Fox Rok … this is the field of dreams for them.”
