Wawa to build and serve a 4.5-ton hoagie
It takes about six hours to build a 4-ton Wawa Italian hoagie.
It takes about 200 builders working in tandem and about 8,000 pounds of ingredients.
Workers will make the sandwich from 5 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. After it’s ready tomorrow, it will will be marched in by a Fife & Drum Corp from Historic Philadelphia along with re- enactors to the Independence Visitor Center Lawn at 6th and MarketsStreets and then served free to attendees.
How does one make a sandwich of that size?
You start by stringing together 15,000 Shorti rolls, which weighs about 1,688 pounds.
Then, layer 563 pounds of Italian ham, Genoa salami and proscuttini and 1,000 pounds of provolone cheese. Top it off with 2,043 sliced tomatoes, 900 pounds of sliced onions and shredded iceberg lettuce, 180 pounds of oregano and 6 gallons of oil.
Throw in a dash of salt and pepper and 240 pounds of hoagie paper wrap.
It serves about 15,000 people in less than 30 minutes.
