A 63-year-old cyclist was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital Tuesday morning after he was struck by a Boston Police cruiser at 8:30 a.m. in front of the Boston Municipal Courthouse.

About nine hours after the incident, Boston police confirmed that the police cruiser struck the man, but did not say what caused the accident.

“The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and no violations or charges have been issued,” police said in a statement.

Witnesses on scene said that a police unit hit the cyclist on New Chardon Street near the corner of Merrimac street, and that the man was knocked off his bike.

The victim, who was not identified, suffered non-life threatening injuries. Police said the officer was taken to Tufts Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

A witness told Channel 7 that the victim’s helmet flew off, and he rolled under the police car, which lost its side rear mirror. The officer reportedly stopped, exited the car and called an ambulance.

One witness said the cyclist worked nearby. The road was blocked off until about noon.

Anyone with information related to the accident is asked to call detectives at (617) 343-4470.
