Alleged mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger is accused of various crimes, including 19 murders, and on Monday the state’s former chief medical examiner explained how each of those people died, in some cases detailing each gunshot wound.

Dr. Richard Evans took the witness stand Monday for day 21 of Bulger’s racketeering, extortion and murder trial. He was asked by government prosecutors to explain the cause and manner of death for each of the alleged victims.

In one murder, the killing of Edward Connors, Evans said he was shot with animal shot and bullets that numbered so many that the medical examiner handed over 12 bottles of projectiles removed from his body. Connors was gunned down allegedly by Bulger and Flemmi while in a Morrissey Boulevard phone booth in 1975.

Brain Halloran, who was gunned down as he left a Seaport District bar in 1982 after Bulger and his gang learned he was talking to the FBI, was shot 14 times and likely died due to blood loss, Evans aid.

Michael Donahue, the man who happened to be giving Halloran a ride home that day, was shot four times.

Donahue’s family has sat through the length of the trail, including many of Bulger’s pretrial hearings. They said it was tough, but not unexpected.

Tommy Donahue, Donahue’s son, told reporters that he carried his father’s death certificate to court with him everyday. Holding it up for reporters, he said besides the “cause of death” line should read the names of the FBI agents who helped protect Bulger during his time as head of the Winter Hill Gang.

In the coming days, Stephen Flemmi is expected to testify about how he and Bulger allegedly ran the Winter Hill Gang.
