One hundred artists and volunteers began painting the city’s longest mural at Rockaway Beach in Queens over the weekend.

Three designs inspired by the Rockaways were painted on a one-mile long set of barriers which were installed to protect pedestrians and bicyclists along the Shore Front Parkway.

Of more than 50 submissions, designs by Jade Chan, John Garcia and Patty Harris were chosen after community members voted on 10 finalists.

Chan’s “In Flight” features white seabirds sillouted against blue waves. After visiting Rockaway Beach, Chan said she thought the image of birds flying was liberating. Her design represents the “freedom and strength of the human spirit,” according to the Parks Department website.

Garcia’s untitled deisgn pays tribute to Rockaway Beach surf culture, with images of surfers riding waves alongside seagulls and other birds that keep them company. The mural also welcomes visitors to the Rockaways, to experience the serenity Garcia has experienced himself surfing on the beach.

Harris’ more abstract design features simple shapes suggesting wave movements. Like water in real life, Harris uses a range of hues to mimic waves. Black silhouetted forms of surfers are also incorporated into the design.

Benjamin Moore donated 420 gallons of paint for the mural.

Mural painting will continue Wednesday, the Parks Department said.
