A Southwest Philadelphia mural has been defaced and the man whose face appears there now with graffiti sprayed on it wants to find who is responsible.

“I want them to learn to appreciate the neighborhood they live in,” said Paul “Earthquake” Moore, a former professional boxer turned anti-violence activist.

The Finnegan Playground mural on the 6900 block of Grovers Avenue depicting Moore has been vandalized and tagged—with some offensive language.

A resident of the area, Moore noticed the damage more than a week ago, he said. He’s alerted city police but wants to see what he can find out on his own. He said he plans to talk to some graffiti experts in the area to see if he can find any leads.

“I want to know who Chaz is,” said Moore, referring to the alleged tag name spray painted on the colorful park mural.

But he’s not out to throw somebody in jail.

“In order to change the community, you have to change the mindset of people,” Moore said. “We need to send a clear message.”

He personally wants to offer those responsible community service in the neighborhood.

Moore also thinks the graffiti could serve as a reminder to people the streets are not as safe and clean as they thought they were. That’s something Moore has been working on for years following his boxing career.

In 2011, he was the winner of the Wrice-Campbell Award for Neighborhood Safety and was elected as chair of the Southwest Community Development Corporation.

“I’m just trying to make this community better,” said Moore. “I’m over here trying to do God’s will. Someone has got to take charge in the community. Somebody has got to stand up.”

Moore is also seeking help from community members to clean up the eight-year-old mural. Interested parties can visit his website for contact information at paulearthquakemoore.com.
