Philadelphia police on Saturday arrested a Strawberry Mansion man after they say a bloody crime scene inside the suspect’s home led them to a body in a nearby field.

Charles Sargent, 43, of the 2100 block of North 32nd Street, was taken into custody Saturday.

Police first responded to Sargent’s home Wednesday, when they received a call reporting a “substantial amount of blood” inside the residence, according to authorities.

Arriving officers allegedly located a crime scene inside the residence they deemed a possible homicide, but did not find a victim in the home.

Police said further investigation by the Central Detective Division shortly before 11:45 a.m. Friday turned up a body – which was reportedly dismembered – in a field about a mile from Sargent’s home, near York Street and Sedgley Avenue.

The identity of the slain person has not yet been released, but The Philadelphia Inquirer, citing police sources, reported the victim to be a prostitute Sargent brought home and allegedly murdered after discovering his sexual partner was a man.

The paper also reported Sargent dismembered the victim with an ax.

Sargent was arraigned shortly before 5:30 p.m. Saturday and charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime and abuse of a corpse.

He is next due in court Aug. 7 for a preliminary hearing.

Sargent has been arrested several times in the past in connection with violent crimes.

He was in 1990 sentenced to 5 to 10 years in jail after being convicted of carrying firearms in a public place, aggravated assault and narcotics offenses.

Sargent in 1996 had another 3 to 24 months tacked onto his sentence after pleading guilty to escaping from prison.
