Former city comptroller Bill Thompson leads both former congressman Anthony Weiner and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn in a runoff election according to a poll released Wednesday.

Of 507 likely Democratic primary voters, Thompson leads 52 to 41 percent in a runoff with Weiner and 51 to 42 percent in a runoff against Quinn, according to the Quinnipiac University’s survey of voters in the last week.

A runoff election between the top two contenders occurs when no one candidate receives 40 percent of the vote.

Though the poll suggest Thompson would beat out his opponents in a runoff, whether or not Thompson will make it there is less clear. In the Sept. 10 primary, Weiner leads likely registered Democrats voters with 26 percent, four points ahead of Quinn and six points ahead of Thompson.

The poll shows that if Weiner drops out of the race—which many of his opponents are calling him to do amid new allegations of sexually-explicit conversations online—Quinn leads with 30 percent of the vote, four points ahead of Thompson.

If Weiner drops out, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio gets 21 percent of likely Democratic voters and City Comptroller John Liu has 10 percent.

Unlike Quinn, Thompson’s supporters are more committed, with 91 percent saying they were “very enthusiastic” or “somewhat enthusiastic” about him. Using the same categories, Quinn has only 79 percent.

Thompson also outscored both Quinn and Weiner on “moral character.”

The survey of likely Democratic primary voters has a margin of error plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
