In a heartfelt essay written last week, former congressman Anthony Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, defends staying with her husband despite his transgressions.

“So why am I doing this?” Abedin writes in an essay titled “The Good Wife” in Harper’s Bazaar. ”Because Anthony has always been a smart, caring and dedicated person, and while he’s the same public servant who wants what’s best for the people he represents, he is now something else — a better man.”

The essay was written days before Weiner confessed he continued having sexually explicit conversations with women online until last summer, a year after resigning in disgrace from Congress when similar conversations were revealed in June 2011.

Though the essay, a section of which was published online Wednesday, was written prior to Weiner’s confession and calls for him to drop out of the mayoral race, in it Abedin echoes the same sentiments as those she expressed during a press conference with her husband Tuesday.

“Our marriage, like many others, has had its ups and its downs,” Abedin said the day new sexting allegations surfaced. “It took a lot of work and a whole lot of therapy to get to a place where I could forgive Anthony.”

In the short selection of the essay for Harper’s, Abedin expands on her feelings, saying that the couple “spent these past few years working through the very private challenges we faced on a very public stage.”

She talks about her and her husband’s love for the city, and how she grew up coming to Queens to stay with cousins. After the birth of their son, Jordan, Abedin says she and Weiner worried about the future, which led him to run for mayor.

“People have said many things about my husband — some nice, some not so nice,” the selection concludes. “And that will surely continue. Launching this campaign was not an easy decision for our family to make. Putting yourself out there comes with a cost.”

The full essay will run in Harper’s September issue, which comes out on Aug. 20.
