After admitting he engaged in extramarital online relationships following his 2011 resignation, former congressman Anthony Weiner has dropped to fourth place in the Democratic primary race, according to a new poll released Monday.

A survey of 446 likely Democratic primary voters showed Weiner with 16 percent of the vote, an eight-point drop in the days following the congressman’s newest sexting revelations, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.

“With six weeks to go, anything can happen, but it looks like former Congressman Anthony Weiner may have sexted himself right out of the race for New York City mayor,” Maurice Carroll, director of the university’s polling institute, said in a statement.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn leads the race with 27 percent of the vote. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio isn’t far behind with 21 percent of the vote, followed by 20 percent for former city comptroller Bill Thompson.

Just over half of likely primary voters surveyed said Weiner should drop out of the race, with another 40 percent saying he should stay in. Despite his statements to the contrary, 65 percent of voters said Weiner’s latest admission is a “legitimate issue,” regardless of whether or not they support his bid.

If Weiner drops out, Quinn leads the poll followed by de Blasio and Thompson tied for second place. Thompson would win in a runoff with Quinn, the poll suggests.

“Don’t bet your paycheck. This is a really goofy election year,” Carroll said of the results.

The poll had a margin of error plus or minus 4.6 percentage points.
