Scott Stringer proposes tracker for federal Sandy funds

If elected, city comptroller candidate Scott Stringer will create a bureau to track Hurricane Sandy relief money.

Operating as a new unit within the Audit Bureau, “Sandy Tracker” would keep tabs on $15 billion in expected federal relief funds over the next several years, according to Stringer’s proposal.

“Nine months after Sandy, the winds have subsided but we still have to confront the challenge of protecting our shoreline communities from the next great storm, and making sure that every tax dollar devoted to returning families to their homes and getting businesses on their feet is spent wisely and efficiently,” Stringer said in a statement.

Stringer announced the proposal with U.S. Congress members Jerry Nadler and Nydia Velazquez Monday in the South Street Seaport, which was devastated after the storm flooded its streets and destroyed several businesses.

Stringer, the Manhattan borough president, is a Democratic candidate for city comptroller against ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer. Though Spitzer resigned as governor in 2008 after being linked to a prostitution scandal, he leads in the latest polls.

Stringer’s new proposal — one of several suggested since the race shake-up — would be modeled after Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s own NYC Stimulus Tracker from 2009.

In the proposal announcement, Stringer highlighted misuse of federal aid after 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina.

“The Comptroller’s Office is uniquely positioned to serve as the city’s watchdog over all Sandy related funds,” he added.

He also proposed a hotline for New Yorkers to report Sandy-releated fraud.
