The same 12-mile stretch of I-95 where two Philly cops were killed in separate incidents nearly 30 years apart has been renamed in their honor.

Officers O’Hanlon and Lorenzo Memorial Highway runs from Allegheny Avenue (mile marker 23) to Academy Road (mile marker 35). Memorial signs can be found on the north and southbound sides of the highway.

The city received approval to rename the section by the General Assembly and signed by the governor last October.

Philadelphia Highway Patrol Officer Charles P. O’Hanlon was killed in 1985 when a tractor-trailer crashed into the rear of his unmarked patrol vehicle. He was 40.

Brian Lorenzo, also a highway patrol officer, died in 2012 when a drunk driver crashed head-on into his motorcycle. He was 48.

Sen. Mike Stack and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter jointed members of the Fraternal Order of Police to dedicate the stretch Tuesday morning.

“They were law enforcement officers and heroic men to their families, friends and communities,” Nutter said in a statement. “Both of these men gave their heart and soul to their jobs and their city, and I’m proud that we can continue to honor them in this fitting way.”

Stack added: “When they died, each man had served about a generation of Philadelphians – and they did it with honor.”
