VIDEO: Sandra Fluke endorses Christine Quinn for New York City mayor

City Council Speaker and mayoral candidate Christine Quinn received another endorsement from a prominent women’s rights activist today, as Sandra Fluke traveled from California to New York to throw her weight behind the race’s only female candidate.

Fluke campaigned at various locations around the city with Quinn and the campaign released a video of Fluke explaining her endorsement.

Fluke currently practices law in California, but gained national recognition when she took the Senate floor as a law student at Georgetown to push for legislation requiring insurance companies to cover the cost of birth control.

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh responded to Fluke’s testimony on-air with vicious attacks regarding her and her sex life. The backlash caused several advertisers to pull their ads from his show. His show is reportedly still feeling the repercussions over a year later.

In her endorsement video, Fluke recounts working with Quinn on domestic violence issues when Fluke “lived in New York a few years back.”

“I’ve watched her be a leader over many years,” Fluke said. ”I know that she’s someone who’s going to champion the communities that I care about.”

Fluke also used some of the same language the Quinn campaign has been sticking to since the latest scandalous Anthony Weiner news broke, when sexual messages he exchanged with an unknown woman just a year ago came to light.

Ruing that the campaign “has not always been able to focus on the issues that New Yorkers care about” because it has “become a little bit of a circus,” Fluke pointedly noted Quinn “has the seriousness and the maturity to handle the office of mayor of New York.”

Fluke also stressed the symbolic importance of a win for Quinn.

“Not only will that mean that New york has a great leader, a great champion for families and women in that office, but that means that little girls around New York and all across the country can see a woman in that office, can see that that’s something that they can be one day,” Fluke said.

Fluke also referenced Quinn’s work to stop misleading information by crisis pregnancy centers in the city, an initiative also supported by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, another high-profile female supporter of the Council Speaker.

Quinn has also received endorsements from Gloria Steinem — albeit somewhat delayed by the paid sick leave controversy — and many women’s organizations, including Emily’s List, the National Organization for Women and NARAL New York.
