The family of Amy Lord is thanking the South Boston community for its support after her murder, and for embracing her while she was alive.

In a statement posted on SouthBostonOnline.com, the family of the 24-year-old murder victim said she immediately sensed that there was a “strong, family-like community” that exists in Southie, and she was anxious to become a part of it.

“She loved everything about it. She found doctor’s offices and felt at home. Thanks to a longtime resident, she found a neighborhood mechanic she trusted and, of course, Castle Island and Sullivan’s,” the statement reads.

The family said they were “incredibly touched” by the outpouring of support they received.

“This is a perfect example of the close, caring community that Amy knew existed. Tragedy can and does strike in places and ways that are unimaginable and we want everyone to know that we will never believe that it defines the South Boston Community.

“Thank you so much for your show of solidarity and connection to us,” the statement continues. “But, most importantly, thank you for embracing Amy. We are sure she is smiling in the vibrant, infectious and loving way that only Amy can.”

Lord was walking from her South Boston apartment July 23 when authorities said she was forced into her car and then taken to ATMs around the city, where she withdrew money. Her body was later found in the Hyde Park recreation area.

Edwin Alemany, 28, will face murder charges in Lord’s death. He is undergoing a mental evaluation in Bridgewater State Hospital after being charged with attacking two other women, one of who was stabbed.

The kidnapping of a young woman leaving her apartment in the early morning led to widespread concern in the South Boston neighborhood. Free self-defense classes were offered and police and elected officials held a community meeting to listen to safety concerns.
