Robbers impersonating cops linked to use of stolen credit card
Police reported a robbery that occurred July 14 in Chinatown and involved robbers pretending to be cops.
At 4:40 a.m. that morning, three men approached a male victim, cops said. One of the men told the victim he was “under cover” and started going through the victim’s pockets while the other two kept a look-out.
After taking the victim’s property, the robbers fled. The victim and a witness chased after the suspects after realizing they were not cops, police said, but when they caught up with the suspects and confronted them, the suspects apparently did not have the victim’s property.
Police also release surveillance photos of two individuals, a man and a woman, using the victim’s stolen credit card in the East Village about an hour later. The man was wearing a black t-shirt with a marijuana leaf on it and camouflage pants.
The NYPD is requesting that anyone with information about these reports call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). All calls are confidential.
