A group known for rounding up geese in an attempt to save them from slaughter rallied in Staten Island Wednesday to protest the removal of the borough’s wild turkeys from the grounds of a mental health facility.

On Monday and Tuesday, several of the birds were taken from the grounds of the South Beach Psychiatric Center and euthanized at a food processing facility by U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services division, according to multiple outlets.

Though the psychiatric center asked for federal help with the bird population—-citing health concerns from their waste—GooseWatch NYC still decried the government’s actions.

“It wasn’t previously clear, it should be now: U.S.D.A. Wildlife Services kills for any reason they think they can get away with to justify their killing, and they are motivated by profit, not human health or safety,” GooseWatch NYC founder and director David Karopkin said in a statement.

Karopkin, joined by City Council candidate John Mancuso and community leaders, spoke out against the killings at the health facility.

In the past, GooseWatch has protested the killing of Brooklyn geese, who were rounded up from Prospect Park in Brooklyn and killed so they wouldn’t disturb air traffic of nearby airports.

Karopkin said the turkeys could have been taken to a sanctuary instead of killed.
