Police chase man through cornfield, arrest him for mobile meth lab

Members of the Kent County Governor’s Task Force on Thursday chased a man through a cornfield before arresting him for allegedly having a mobile meth lab in his car.

Police said David McCurley, 33, was around 3:20 p.m. spotted sitting in a 1997 Ford Escort at Booth Branch Lane and Andrewville Road in Greenwood, Del.

McCurley was not wearing a seatbelt and his driver’s side door was open, according to authorities.

Two members of the Task Force, along with a Delaware state trooper and a parole officer, initiated a traffic stop on the suspicious vehicle.

McCurley allegedly ignored the trooper who approached his car and instead closed the door and put his seatbelt on.

The trooper reached through the vehicle’s open window and touched McCurley’s arm to get his attention.

That’s when, according to investigators, McCurley “suddenly accelerated,” striking the trooper’s arm with his car and touching off a vehicle pursuit that only ended when McCurley drove off the road and crashed his car in the yard of a home on the 6200 block of Nine Foot Road.

McCurley then allegedly fled on foot into a cornfield with the trooper who initially stopped him close behind.

Police said McCurley turned around and began swinging at the trooper, who then Tasered the suspect to no avail.

After what investigators described as “a continued struggle,” members of the Task Force and officers from assisting agencies were able to arrest McCurley.

A search of the man’s vehicle allegedly turned up a mobile meth lab, which police said wasn’t active so troopers were able to safely disassemble it.

The trooper McCurley allegedly hit with his car suffered an arm injury but did not require immediate medical treatment.

McCurley was taken to Troop 3 and charged with manufacturing a controlled substance, resisting arrest with force or violence, second-degree assasult, disregarding a police officer’s signal, possession of drug paraphernalia and numerous traffic violations.

He was jailed at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $7,650 secured bail.
