Rockaway ferry service extended through end of January
Weekday ferry service between the Rockaways and Lower Manhattan will continue through the end of January, officials announced Wednesday.
“Ferry service has proven to be a popular and effective mode of transportation for Rockaways and Brooklyn residents,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement.
The $2 ferry service runs from Beach 108th Street and Beach Channel Drive in Queens, stopping in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and Pier 11 in Lower Manhattan, with a free transfer to East 34th Street in Midtown.
Operated by Seastreak and coordinated by the city’s Economic Development Corporation, the service has proved invaluable to straphangers affected by transit outages after Superstorm Sandy, officials said. Though most transit has been restored since the storm, demand hasn’t decreased.
Since its launch in November, the ferry has completed more than 120,000 passenger trips.
Last month, the ferry began stopping in Brooklyn to accommodate some 65,000 R Train riders affected by service disruptions from Sandy-related repairs.
Brooklyn Councilman Vincent Gentile said he did a jig when he heard the service was extended. Issues with the R Train have left some of his constituents stranded.
“That impending crisis I think, in the overall scope of things, helped us convince the city to bring ferry service to Brooklyn,” Gentile said.
Queens Borough President Helen Marshall said the extension was “wonderful” news.
“The residents of the Rockaways have had to deal with a lot during the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, but having a convenient and environmentally friendly ferry service to Manhattan has helped make their lives a little bit easier,” Marshall said in a statement.
This is the third extension of the ferry service and officials said they hoped it would not be the last.
“If people are using it and finding it a much better way for Brooklynites to get into Manhattan, then maybe it can continue,” Gentile said. “We’re going to take it a step at a time.”
