All students in the Boston Public Schools will be offered free lunch during this upcoming school year.

The new lunch offerings are not dependent on the income of each student’s family. Instead, the lunches are part of an experimental federal initiative that aims to make it easier for students from low-income families to receive free meals by eliminating the need to fill out paperwork, including potentially invasive questions about income, the Boston Globe reports.

“Every child has a right to healthy, nutritious meals in school, and when we saw a chance to offer these healthy meals at no cost to them, we jumped at the chance,” said Mayor Thomas M. Menino in a prepared statement, the Globe reports. “This takes the burden of proof off our low-income families and allows all children, regardless of income, to know healthy meals are waiting for them at school every day.”

Last year, an initiative providing all students with free breakfasts was adopted by the BPS system.

Other cities including Atlanta, Detroit, and Chicago have also adopted the free lunch model.

The first day of school is Wednesday, September 4 for students in grades 1 through 12. Kindergarten does not begin under September 9.
