Police arrested a Mattapan man after he reportedly set his ex-girlfriend’s Dorchester house on fire early Saturday morning.

The ex-girlfriend reportedly came home to find him leaving the house just as the the front porch was errupting into flames. Firefighters responded to the working fire at 8 Stonehurst St. in Dorchester at around 1:41 a.m. on Sept. 7.

Firefighters were extinguishing the flames and searching for victims when the woman reportedly ran up to them yelling excitedly, “He did it!” while pointing at a black Ford Expedition SUV parked near the house.

Officers said the sole male occupant of the car – later identified as Troy Poindexter, 35, of Mattapan – was sweating profusely as if he had recently been involved in physical activity.

The woman told police she shared a child with the Poindexter but they were no longer in a relationship. Poindexter had sent her text messages “attempting to restore their previous relationship” before he allegedly set her house on fire.

Fire officials said they found evidence that lighter fluid was used as an accelerant to start the fire.

Officers arrested Poindexter on charges of arson and breaking and entering in a house. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on Monday, Sept. 9.
