The Bacon Food Truck: Boston to get oink worthy mobile meals
The creators of a soon-to-launch Bacon Food Truck are sizzling with excitement at the thought of their childhood dream hitting the streets of Boston.
Sam Williams and J.J. Frosk, both 24, have been friends since high school, but bacon lovers since birth.
“We’ve been best friends for a long time, and that involved a lot of sitting around and eating, cooking up bacon and dreaming up the possibilities of a bacon-themed establishment,” said Frosk.
The Bacon Truck is expected to serve at SoWa Farmer’s Market this Sunday and at the second annual Charles River Food Truck Festival on Sept. 21. The pair will have to put on the brakes after that, as details are still being worked out as to when and where the truck can start a regular vending schedule in Boston.
“We are treating this fall as our soft opening,” said Williams, adding that the truck will vend on weekends and take on catering orders — they have already fed a few weddings.
“The truck will probably go off road at the end of November, but by April we will be participating in Boston’s food truck program and vending five or six days per week,” he said.
Both men have experience working for local food trucks: Frosk was a supervisor for Grilled Cheese Nation, and Williams used to work on the Lobstah Love food truck.
“We wanted to gain that experience to find out what an average day was like. We loved it, and can’t wait to start. It is a little daunting, but to say we are excited is an understatement,” said Williams.
The truck will feature fresh twists on classic bacon sandwiches, like the BLT and the turkey club, as well as porky desserts like Nutella-covered bacon and candied bacon with cookie butter drizzle.
Concoctions will be crafted with bacon from the Boston Brisket Company in Roxbury.
“Right now we are keeping it local,” said Frosk. When asked what was his favorite bacon recipe, he said, “That would be bacon a-la-carte: just bacon.”
To nurture the new venture, the truck will solicit feedback from Boston bacon lovers. The pair plan to use social media to get recipe requests from customers, which will then be featured on the menu.
Considering the notorious artery-clogging characteristics of bacon, Williams and Frosk are depending on customers’ fondness for self-indulgence.
“It could be a countermeasure to the health food craze. If you want to enjoy bacon in your cocktail, or on a food truck, it shows you are willing to throw caution to the wind in terms of how you enjoy things,” said Williams.
With bacon-flavored vodka, lube, condoms and mouthwash (best used in that order) it’s clear that the pair is striking while the skillet is hot.
“I’m not sure why bacon is reaching its peak,” said Williams. “But it’s definitely not going anywhere.”
