Emerson College to hold 9/11 candlelight vigil in Boston Common

Emerson College will hold its annual 9/11 vigil in honor of terrorism victims worldwide today at 7 p.m. at Boston Common’s Parkman Bandstand.

The annual event was initiated by Emerson’s Communication Politics and Law Association, a student organization, and its faculty adviser, communication studies associate professor Gregory Payne, on the evening of Sept. 11, 2001.

“The vigil is an important tradition for faculty, students and staff at the college, and for those who live in the surrounding neighborhoods,” said Payne. “It’s a time to come together, reflect, and remember those who were lost on Sept. 11. It’s also a chance to continue to heal as a community through understanding, tolerance and forgiveness.”

The vigil honors those who were lost on 9/11, including Emerson alumna Jane Simpkin; faculty member Myra Aronson; and the wife of a former Emerson trustee, Sonia Mercedez Puopolo, whose daughter Tito Puopolo, an alumna of the college, will speak at the vigil.

Additional speakers and attendees include Emerson President Lee Pelton, members of the Emerson community, Boston Public Schools, students from Bird Street After School Program, and student organizations from MIT and Harvard.
