A former music teacher at Stuyvesant High School has been convicted of selling illegal firearms to undercover officers in a 2010 sting operation.

Theophilus Burroughs, 51, pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering, sale of illegal firearms, tax fraud, and evasion of the state’s cigarette tax.

His arrest came after a year-long joint investigation by the Bronx District Attorney’s Office and the state’s Department of Taxation and Finance in which a Bronx warehouse was bugged and closely monitored during deals.

In addition to selling AK-47s and other assault rifles, between August of 2009 and July of 2010, Burroughs bought and re-sold more than 36,000 cartons of cigarettes, managing to evade $1,750,000 in state taxes, Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson said.

Justice Steven Barrett has indicated that in return for his guilty plea, Burroughs will receive a 10-year prison sentence, down from a maximum of 25, when he is sentenced next month.
