A jogger taking an evening run at a park in Fairhaven was stabbed on Monday.

Emily Baumgart had just finished her workout and was headed back to her car when she was assaulted and robbed of her iPod, SouthCoastToday.com reports. Assuming that she had been punched in the stomach, Baumgart got up and headed home.

But upon her return home, Baumgart realized she had been stabbed, not punched, in the abdomen.

“He must have come out of the woods because I didn’t see him,” Baumgart said. “I only saw him when he was right next to me.”

The attacker, who Baumgart described as a man wearing a sweatshirt and gym shorts, used some sort of jagged object, not a knife, to stab her.

Police searched the area after the attack but didn’t find the suspect.

Emily spent the night in the hospital. Still, she says she wouldn’t stop running at night, and considers the incident to be isolated.

“I was more worried about animals coming out of the brush because that seems more likely,” Baumgart said.

According to authorities, lighting in the Fort Phoenix area has been of concern. They advise runners to go out in pairs, or stick to areas with better lighting.
