The MTA and AT&T announced Tuesday the winners of their 2013 App Quest challenge.

The challenge solicited entries from all over the world to create apps for New York City commuters.

The $20,000 grand prize — as well as an additional $2,000 for the MTA Wish List App — went to Citymapper, which uses real-time transit information to improve travel guides and provides hyperlocal weather and the ability to personalize the app with the user’s most visited places.

Second place and $10,000 went to Subculture.FM for connecting riders with artists seen on the subway. The app provides subway musicians with QR codes to display during their performances so spectators can identify and find them later.

A $5,000 third prize went to Transit App for using real time data to advise riders of train and bus locations, departure times and service changes.

The apps were developed as part of the 2013 App Quest virtual challenge that launched in May with the MTA’s first officially sponsored weekend hackathon. The final deadline was in August. App Quest received 49 total submissions.
