New York apple crop is the best in years

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is excited about this year’s apple harvest in New York state, he said on Monday.

Cuomo said apple growers from the more than 650 apple orchards statewide have told him this year’s crop will be the best apples the state has seen in several years, after a string of near-annual storms that battered the industry.

“Whether it’s a homemade apple pie or an apple cider doughnut, there is a wide selection of delicious apple products to enjoy, and I encourage New Yorkers to visit a local apple orchard this autumn,” the governor said in a statement.

New York ranks second in the country for apple production (Washington beat the Big Apple’s home state to first, apparently). But last year’s harvest was badly hurt by an early spring followed by several apple bud-killing frosts.

But apple prospects are apparently looking up this year.

Cuomo also announced two new apple varieties developed by researchers at Cornell University with the New York Apple Growers. The new apples are called SnapDragon and RubyFrost and have reportedly spent about ten years in development and undergone a year-long consumer testing process before being released for mass consumption at NYAG farm stands this fall.

Find hotspots to buy home-grown New York State apple ciders, hard ciders and apple wines at the “Taste NY” website, and information on the state’s 654 apple orchards at the New York Apple Association’s website. You can also look up your nearest u-pick orchard here.
