Abandoned, injured puppy found in East Boston churchyard up for adoption

A 5-month-old injured puppy found in an East Boston churchyard was brought to the MSPCA-Angell in Jamaica Plain on Sept. 10 by what animal rescue officials described as a “good Samaritan who worried the dog might not survive alone on the streets.”

Now, the brown and brindle pit bull mix, who has since been named Ramona by staffers, is up for adoption.

The puppy had several broken toes — a painful injury likely caused by a run-in with a car, MSPCA officials said.

Ramona had no identification tags or a microchip. When found behind the Most Holy Redeemer Church on Maverick Street in East Boston, she wagged her tail and limped toward the man who ultimately brought her to the MSPCA. X-rays confirmed several of her front left toes were broken, requiring her to wear a splint for several weeks.

“Sadly, we see these very situations all the time in which a dog comes to us broken — with no home and no means to take care of itself. In this case, Ramona suffered outside for what could have been days in a significant amount of pain,” said Amanda Laskoe, animal care supervisor at the MSPCA-Angell.

Ramona was fitted for her cast by shelter veterinarians at the MSPCA’s Shalit-Glazer Clinic, which performs spay and neuter surgeries as well as other treatments and procedures on homeless animals before they are made available for adoption.

“We’re going to do all we can to get her well and into a loving home that she so deserves,” said Laskoe.

Anyone interested in Ramona can contact the adoption center directly at adoption@mspca.org to learn more about the kind of home staff members are searching for.
