Laser beam to shine on Boston University for art installation

A bird? A plane? No. It’s a laser beam! 

An art installation going on display Thursday night at Boston University will feature a green laser beam shooting between two of the college’s towers, the school said.

The project by German-Swiss artist Florian Dombois is called “uboc No. 1 & stuVi2.” It has been dubbed the Talking Towers.

Starting Thursday at dusk, a green laser will stretch between the School of Law building and the Student Village 2 dormitory. The law building has been nicknamed by students as the ugliest building on campus, hence the project name “uboc.”

The installation will begin at dusk and run until 2 a.m. It will last through Sunday evening.

The installation comes ahead of the TransCultural Exchange 2013 Conference on International Opportunities in the Arts, Engaging Minds being hosted at BU.

While renderings of the project and the original plan have called for a red laser beam, a test run on Wednesday night revealed that a blue/green beam would be clearer and more vivid, said the managing director of the BU Arts Initiative. The Arts Initiative is partially funding the installation.

“The Florian Dombois piece not only brings dramatic attention to the Boston University campus, it is a visual reminder of the connection between the arts and the university and of the interdisciplinary collaboration of today’s global arts community,” said Benjamin Juárez, dean of College of Fine Arts.
