A gas leak prompted the evacuation of homes and commercial buildings on Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton Monday, suspending service on the Green Line and jamming up traffic along the busy thoroughway.

A backhoe removing a tree stump in front of 1867 Comm. Ave. hit and ruptured a four-inch gas line around 12:23 p.m, according to The Boston Fire Department, which kept the public updated on Twitter.

There were no reports of injuries.

National Grid officials were called to the scene, and the MBTA was forced to suspend B-line service for 40 minutes. The leak caused traffic delays in the area, as the outbound side of Commonwealth Avenue was closed from Chiswick Road to Chestnut Hill Avenue.

Meter readings were negative in the surrounding buildings, according to fire officials.
