Grand Central has a message for the 750,000 people who wander under its starry vaulted ceiling: Buy local.

A program established by Gov. Andrew Cuomo geared at promoting New York’s food and drink producers is setting up shop in the landmark transit hub.

A new TasteNY store in the terminal will offer commuters locally-produced food and beverages. This new participation in the program by the MTA comes on the heels of a recent initiative stocking Long Island Railroad and Metro-North bar carts in Penn Station and Grand Central with New York-made wine, beers and alcohol.

MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast cited “the explosive interest in artisanal and craft foods and beverages” as part of the impetus for the program, and spoke proudly of a long history of wine and beer-making in New York state.

“The time is right for the producers of New York’s great foods and beverages to break into and tap this great marketplace of commuters, travelers, tourists and shoppers,” Prendergast said.

Grand Central is estimated to be the second most popular public space in New York City after TImes Square.
