Most New York State voters view Congress unfavorably, poll finds

About three-fourths of New York State voters view Congress unfavorably and believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, according to a poll released Tuesday.

Only 18 percent of New Yorkers have a favorable view of Congress, and only 19 percent believe the country is on the right track, a Siena College Poll found.

The majority of statewide voters surveyed, 59 percent, blamed Congressional Republicans for the government shutdown, though 30 percent said President Barack Obama was most responsible.

“Albany, it appears, has found a way to deflect the ‘dysfunction’ card. It flipped it over to Washington,” Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg said in a statement.

“Congress came within one point of tying the Siena College Poll record high unfavorable rating, recorded by Eliot Spitzer the week he resigned as governor,” he added.

The poll surveyed 822 registered voters statewide and complete results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

Of voters polled, 39 percent live in New York City, showing similar results to statewide trends.

Most city voters polled believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, with only 22 percent saying the country is on the right track.

A fifth of New York City respondents had a favorable opinion of Congress, while 75 percent held unfavorable opinions of those on Capitol Hill.

Most city voters blamed the shutdown on Congressional Republicans.

The poll of city voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.
