New Bedford student finds worm-like creature in school lunch
A New Bedford High School student got a surprise on Wednesday when she found a worm-like creature in her school lunch.
“It blended in,” New Bedford High School student Ereyana Silveira told the New Bedford Standard Times, describing it as “off-white” and “nasty.”
The creature was in a serving of brown rice, and appeared to still be alive, said Silveira, a junior at the school.
“It was on my fork and it was moving a little bit,” she said.
A health department investigation was subsequently launched, and School Business Manager Patrick Murphy told the Times that the situation was an “isolated incident.”
“What is clear is that it was not a maggot,” Murphy said. “There is no infestation of bugs or maggots.”
The shipment of brown rice, which the school received from the federal government, wasn’t due to expire until 2014.
The New Bedford Public Schools lunch menu describes Wednesday’s lunch as “chicken terry-yaki dippers, brown rice with beans, peas, pears, and milk.”
