A student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is due in court Monday, accused of improperly storing a firearm and carrying a firearm on campus.

According to a report by the Herald News, UMass Dartmouth campus police seized two loaded .45-caliber handguns and ammunition from William Deforte, 32, of Clinton, Penn., a student who told police he is a part-time police officer in Pennsylvania.

Col. Emil Fioravanti, UMass Dartmouth director of public safety, told the paper that Deforte has been issued a summons to appear in Third District Court in New Bedford to face the charges, and that he has also been placed on interim suspension from the university, has been given a no-trespass order for all university property and will face student-conduct charges.

Fioravanti said other students reported to campus police Tuesday morning that Deforte had displayed handguns to them and was living in their Cedar Dell Suite without permission of the university.

“I wish to thank the students who came forward to help keep their community safe,” Fioravanti told the Herald News. “The ‘See Something. Say Something’ Initiative that we have been promoting can only be successful if students, faculty and staff are willing to step forward. These students did just that and deserve our applause.”
