Massachusetts State Police will promote its use of social media in policing by joining more than 100 police agencies across six countries to participate in the second global “Tweet-a-Thon” Friday.

The 24-hour virtual event starts at 8 a.m., and will be focused around the hashtag, #poltwt. State Police said their participation also creates awareness about police work and issues police face.

Officers will tweet from the department’s Holden headquarters, sending out a “virtual dispatch” of calls around Central Massachusetts,  between the New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut borders.

“The Massachusetts State Police typically do not tweet everyday calls, but will be adding this as part of our participation in this global event. Trooper @DustinGFitch will be tweeting for the @MassStatePolice,” police said in a statement today.

“We are grateful for our Twitter followers and hope they enjoy this glimpse of a day in the life of one of our Troops,” said Trooper Fitch, the department’s Social Media Specialist.

“We have participation from agencies in New Zealand and Kenya all over Europe, Canada and the US.” said Lauri Stevens, founder of LAwS Communications and organizer of the Global Police Tweet-a-thon. “We’re calling attention to the great police work being done globally as well as connecting cops around the world.”

In March, Metro reported on the Cambridge Police Department’s push to keep the public updated on social media.
