The family of a Middleboro man who was killed in a hit and run have high hopes after authorities recovered the Jeep Grand Cherokee believed to have been involved in the deadly incident.

Police confirmed to the Brockton Enterprise that they have seized the Jeep involved in the dead crash, which killed Michael Dutra, 58. Dutra was riding his bike to a grocery store when he was struck by a car and killed on Wood Street.

Though it was originally described by a witness as a white car, on Friday authorities determined the car was actually black. In three days, police located the suspect vehicle at a Middleboro home and impounded it at the State Police barracks on Route 28, according to the Enterprise.

Michael Dutra’s daughter Michelle said in a statement to the Enterprise that she hopes police will be able to arrest someone soon.

“The person who did this needs to take responsibility. I want this to be over. I want justice for my dad,” she said. “It absolutely breaks my heart that this person has taken so much from me and my family. I hope to see some remorse.

“I’m sure this person wasn’t driving around looking for bicyclists. I know they didn’t mean to hit my dad. But they did. … It’s been a conscious decision not to come forward the past two-and-a-half, three weeks,” she said. “I don’t know how this person has been able to live with themselves.”

On Oct. 15, police identified the car involved in the incident as a Jeep Grand Cherokee made between 2005 to 2009.
