4 World Trade Center opens
Twelve years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, another office building opened at the site of the World Trade Center Wednesday.
“As we open its doors, the site once again becomes a part of New York’s continued growth, reconnected with the city that surrounds it,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at the building’s ribbon-cutting.
The lobby design is intended to integrate the 9/11 Memorial by offering panoramic views of the site. The building, designed by architect Fumihiko Maki, is across from the memorial’s south reflecting poll.
The building features waterfalls, trees and was designed to play a role in the redevelopment of lower Manhattan.
Much of the building is leased by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the city.
The 72-story building stands at 978 feet tall, the fourth-tallest skyscraper in the World Trade Center Site. On Tuesday, 1 World Trade Center was officially ruled the tallest skyscraper in the world.
