The Piazza at Schmidt’s is transforming into a winter haven as live music, classic winter movies and a 5,000-square-foot pop-up ice skating rink will be featured this winter season.

Beginning Nov. 30, the ice skating rink will be open for three months, while the Sochi Winter Olympics will play on the jumbo screen in the middle of the Piazza’s courtyard.

There’s already a buzz in the community about the winter events, said Piazza spokeswomen Ruthann Francis. Matt Rubin, president of the Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association, is anticipating the winter wonderland.

“Feedback has been great,” Francis said. “Matt Rubin said he was thrilled. He’s really helping us push this out.”

The Piazza holds flea markets, live music events, Phillies games and much more throughout the summer but the winter months in years past have been much more dormant than they will be starting the end of this month.

“It’s a really innovative use of the space we have for the winter months,” Francis added.
