With just weeks left in Thomas Menino’s five-term tenure as mayor, the outgoing politician on Wednesday officially announced his plans to join Boston University’s political science department.

“Cities make things work,” Menino Tweet Wednesday morning. “Thrilled to announce I’ll join @BU_Tweets as codirector of initiative to help cities thrive.”

Menino will co-direct the university’s new Initiative on Cities along with Graham Wilson, chair of the political science department at BU.

“Cities are full of energy and promise, but they are also full of challenges — on environmental fronts, on educational roadblocks, on growing inequalities,” Menino said, alongside Boston University President Robert Brown. “I hope very much to sit down with mayors and leaders around the world as I tackle these issues.”

The 70-year-old announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election to a sixth term. State Rep. Marty Walsh won election last week and will succeed Menino on Jan. 6.
