A Newton man allegedly stabbed a person and punched another after he was refused entry into a downtown Boston bar early Sunday morning.

Police said officers were called to Coogan’s at 191 Milk St. just after 12:30 a.m. for a report of a stabbing. When officers arrived they found a man in his 20s being attended to by bar staff. He was suffering from a stab wounds to his torso and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries.

A second victim told officers that the stabber and another man tired to get into Coogan’s earlier, but that the man who was stabbed told them they had to wait in line. The men went back in line but returned later.

That’s when they tried to cut in line, but were denied access again. The second victim said that’s when the man punched him in the side of the face multiple times, pulled a knife, lunged at the other man and stabbed him.

Witnesses told police the man fled in a cab. Officers put out a description of the suspect and cab, which were located later in Charlestown. Police said a knife was found on the floor of the cab by the suspect’s feet.

Peter Damelio, 38, was charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon. He is due in court on Monday.

A woman who answered the phone at the bar said a manager was not available to speak. A police spokeswoman would not confirm whether the two victims were employees of the bar.
