Chris Christie could win New York against Andrew Cuomo in 2016 presidential matchup, poll suggests

New York, normally a shoe-in for national Democrats, would go red if Govs. Chris Christie and Andrew Cuomo faced-off in the 2016 presidential race, a poll suggests.

The New Jersey governor would defeat Cuomo in his home state 47 to 42 percent, according to a Siena College Poll of 806 registered voters in New York state released Monday.

“Despite ‘home court advantage’ and a two-to-one Democratic enrollment advantage, Christie is besting Cuomo by five points,” Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg said in a statement.

Among city voters, Cuomo leads Christie 55 to 36 percent, but this “is not enough to offset Christie’s comparable upstate and suburban leads, not to mention Christie’s 21-point lead among independent voters,” Greenberg said.

Cuomo’s favorability is 61 percent, while 63 percent of respondents had a favorable opinion of Christie.

“New Yorkers might like to poke fun at their Garden State neighbors — what New Yorker doesn’t know a good Jersey joke? — but voters here like Chris Christie the recently re-elected Republican governor,” Greenberg quipped.

The poll also found that former Sect. of State Hillary Clinton would defeat Christie in New York 56 to 40 percent.

The poll of New York state voters has a margin of error plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
