Teen arrested for fatal Middleboro hit-and-run

The teenager responsible for the hit-and-run that killed a Middleboro father has been arrested after he tried to say that it was a deer he hit back in early October.

The driver, 18-year-old UMass Dartmouth student Eric Megna, told police that he had hit a deer that night. Just a few days after the crash, Megna reported to the New Hampshire State Police that he hit a deer, and sent a picture of a dead deer to his mother, which she showed to investigators.

Police determined that the photograph was downloaded from the Internet and there were no signs of fur or other deer remains on Megna’s black Jeep Grand Cherokee, WBZ reported.

Michael Dutra, 58, was riding his bike to a grocery store when he was struck by Megna’s vehicle on Wood Street.

Dutra’s family told WHDH they wish the driver had stopped.

“They would have come forward with a little bit of remorse, that would have been easier for us. My dad was an amazing man, he didn’t deserve to be left on the side of the road,” his daughter said.

Dutra had received a liver transplant in 1991, but nearly died last year from complications. He had just gotten back on the path to health at the time of his death.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee the teen was driving was discovered thanks to debris left at the scene. On Oct. 30, police seized the car.
