Latiff Hadi and Tina Cuffie were both sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison today for starving and beating their 6-year-old son to death, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams announced.

Khalil Wimes, 6, weighed only 29 pounds when he was pronounced dead on March 29, 2012 inside his home on the 1800 block of N. 22nd Street.

Cuffie and Hadi were convicted of third-degree murder after trial in September.

At the time of his death, Wimes’ body was covered in bruises, he had 15 scars visible on his face, and there were hemorrhages beneath the skin of his head,  a medical examiner testified.

Cuffie told police after Wimes’ death that she had previously smacked him on the back of the head and he fell on his face on the bathroom floor, was disoriented afterwards and never recovered before dying.

Wimes lived with a foster family for the first three years of his life before Cuffie and Hadi, his biological parents, won custody of him in 2009.

The city’s Department of Human Services (DHS) came under fire and pledged a “culture shift” after it was revealed that a DHS social worker who visited the family did not have an open case on Wimes.
