Mayor Thomas Menino’s Office of New Urban Mechanics (MONUM) is one of five government programs across the nation vying for the Harvard Kennedy School’s Innovations in American Government Award, which recognizes excellence in the public sector.

The school’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation announced Tuesday that the program was selected as a finalist from a pool of more than 600 applicants.

According to local officials, the program aims to deliver transformative city services to residents, increase civic participation, improve city streets and boost educational outcomes.

The other four finalists are: the federal website; Healthy Incentives of King County, Washington; the federal Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative; and the Smart Roadside Inspection System of New Mexico.

The Innovations Award winner will be announced later this year.

MONUM projects include:

- City Hall To Go, a vendor truck that provides basic city services to people in Boston.

- Street Bump, a mobile app that helps residents improve their neighborhood streets.

- Complete Streets, an effort to improve the flow of people and goods through Boston by making transportation infrastructure greener and smarter.
