State police will have eyes on roads for Thanksgiving travel

State police have issued an advisory for people daring enough to brave the roads Wednesday — one of the busiest travel days of the year.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the holiday, according to AAA, which also estimated that 43.4 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more during the weekend from Wednesday to Sunday.

What’s more, a storm is expected to bring heavy rain to the Boston region on Wednesday, slowing traffic and worsening road conditions.

In anticipation of the increased traffic, state police urged people to make extra time for their commutes, leave additional space between their car and other cars, and adjust speed for road and weather conditions.

Also, state police said they would be focusing on impaired and aggressive driving as well as seat-belt use.

“The state police will have the maximum number of available personnel on the highways to help ensure a safe Thanksgiving holiday,” state police said in a statement. “This year’s focus will be on impaired drivers, aggressive drivers and the proper use of safety belts and child restraints.”

Police urged people who are celebrating with alcohol to stay over where they are visiting or to designate a sober driver.
