Politicians offered their prayers and condolences to those killed and injured after a Metro-North train derailed in the Bronx early Sunday morning.

New York Senate Majority Coalition Leader Jeff Klein was at the scene Sunday, and offered this statement: “This is a tragic and horrifying day for the passengers, crew and family members of those onboard, as well as those in the surrounding community. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those who have been touched by this terrible accident. I commend our first responders who have done a tremendous job combing through the wreckage, identifying passengers and treating the victims.”

Klein emphasized that he wants to fix the safety issues with the track. “This is clearly a problem on this stretch of track. The NTSB will be conducting a full investigation of the incident, as they should,” he said in his statement. “But in the meantime, we need to start addressing these safety issues right away. We cannot afford to put any more lives at risk while we wait for a months-long investigation.”

Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio said in a statement, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones of those killed and injured in this morning’s tragedy. I spoke with [NYPD] Commissioner [Ray] Kelly this morning and my office continues to monitor the situation. We stand ready to work with officials and authorities in any way we can to help those in need, and to learn the cause of this accident.”

Mayor Michael Bloomberg tweeted his condolences and urged concerned family members to call 311.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo was at the site of the derailment when he told reporters, “Four people lost their lives today in the holiday season right after Thanksgiving. They are in our thoughts and prayers.”

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said in a statement, “While we learn more about the specifics of what exactly happened this morning, my thoughts and prayers, as well as those of all 1.4 million Bronx residents, are with the victims and their families as they deal with this terrible tragedy.”

President Barack Obama also issued a statement regarding the tragedy. A White House representative sent out a release on the incident. “[President Obama's] thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families who lost a loved one and everyone affected by this incident. The White House will continue to stay in contact with the federal, state and local partners as they respond to this event.”
