In the hours after the Metro-North train derailment, Mayor Michael Bloomberg was reportedly on a golf course in Bermuda.

Someone who spotted the mayor at the island Mid Ocean golf club told The Wall Street Journal that Bloomberg was on the green until about noon New York time.

Four people died after a southbound Metro-North train derailed roughly 100 yards from the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx around 7:20 Sunday morning.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo arrived on the scene roughly two hours later, along with several members of Bloomberg’s administration, including NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Bloomberg visited with injured victims of the derailment at a Bronx hospital Sunday night, but refused to disclose his whereabouts, explaining first responders did their job. The mayor again refused to disclose his whereabouts when pressed by reporters at City Hall Monday, referring to a public schedule that showed only his weekly, pre-taped radio address for Sunday.

Earlier in City Hall Park, Mayor-Elect Bill de Blasio would not comment on Bloomberg’s absence at the scene of the derailment. He said that it would have been, generally speaking, “important to be there.”

“My instinct in these things is to be present even if the city is not the lead,” de Blasio said. “Obviously it’s a bit of a case-by-case situation. But in this case I would have been there.”
